Elo rating

also: Elo · club rating · power rating

A club strength rating that moves after every match by how surprising the result was.

Formula
expected = 1 / (1 + 10^(-(diff + 60 home) / 400)); change = 20 x goal multiplier x (result - expected)

Every club starts at 1500 (a club first seen after the competition's first season at 1450). After each match the winner takes points from the loser in proportion to how unexpected the result was, scaled up for a two-goal or bigger margin; a draw moves the underdog up. Home advantage is worth 60 points.

Between seasons each rating moves a third of the way back to 1500, because squads change. Ratings are per competition: a club's Champions League rating moves only on Champions League matches.

The common mistake

Elo knows only results. It does not see injuries, a new manager or a January signing until the matches show it, and a promoted club starts from a default rather than its second-tier form.
