Shot map

also: shot chart · shot locations

Every shot a team or player took, or a team conceded, drawn where it was taken, with its outcome and xG.

A shot map is the raw material under xG: each shot's x/y on the pitch, where it ended, whether it was saved, blocked, missed or scored, and the body part. get_shot_map returns the shots and rolls them up into zones: the six-yard box, the rest of the penalty area, outside the box and penalties.

ESPN's frame measures x from the goal line as a share of half the pitch and y across it; the penalty spot sits at x 0.23, about 11 m. Shots are recorded from 2012-13 in the European leagues and in 2008-09 and from 2012 in MLS.

The common mistake

Locations are where the data provider placed the shot, to about a metre. Two shots on the same spot can be very different chances. Use zones and xG over a season, not a single dot.
